Eora/Sydney industrial techno-pop artist REBEL YELL shares new single ‘Theme’, a fierce declaration of identity that doubles as a handy introduction for anyone who hasn’t been paying attention for the past decade.
Opening with the line “It’s Rebel Yell / put you under my spell”, the track is playful, confrontational and completely self-assured. Built around driving beats and abrasive electronics, ‘Theme’ feels like a roll call of everything that makes REBEL YELL such a compelling artist: the intensity, the vulnerability and the refusal to smooth off the rough edges.
There are nods to earlier songs, references to collaborators and reflections on the cost of constantly putting yourself out there. As Stevenson sings, “Reveal myself bit by bit / every time I take the hit”, she’s documenting what it takes to keep creating when everyone has an opinion.
