Velodrome: single launch to support Mental Health Awareness Week

velodrome artwork wide format youtube.jpg14-20 May is Mental Health Awareness Week UK. It’s a great time to talk more openly about mental health as something that affects us all, just like physical health. The stigma around mental health is fading. Music is not only an amazing creative outlet, and a creator of communities; it is also a great way to discuss otherwise taboo themes.

Velodrome is an experimental rock project by DIY artist Katherine Christie Evans; a queer songwriter, guitarist, bassist and drummer. She combines her baroque vocals, layers of melody & eccentric lyrics with a lo-fi, retro aesthetic.

Velodrome’s music is inspired by a range of personal issues. Her lyrics document her experience of suffering from chronic anxiety conditions; being queer; and encountering barriers to her work that result from lack of diversity in the arts.

She is an artist and musician working at the intersections of feminism, social inequality, and mental health and queer visibility.

Velodrome’s debut single “His Physique” is released today to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week. The launch event for the single will be a fundraiser for Stonewall. Held on June 19th at DIY Space for London, it will be a space for female, non-binary & LGBTQIA+ identifying people to share art, films and more, around the theme of mental health. Follow Velodrome for more details of the event!

In the meantime, check out the Youtube teaser for Velodrome’s music video:

His Physique is a psychedelic lo-fi rock song, in which Velodrome explores her fascination with “Queering” the male figure; from Renaissance paintings through to icons in pop culture.

The truly DIY music video explores some of the images that inspire the song. She deviates from gender roles and steps into the shoes of male protagonists, from Sir Lancelot, to a lovelorn gay monk in a monastery; a medieval minstrel; Buddy Holly, and Kirk Hammett from Metallica.

gig review: Hot Sauce Pony, Wolf Girl, Velodrome, Jenn Hart

Another awesome LOUD WOMEN night last night! A really mixed line-up this one – just the way we like it! Samey line-ups are for boys.

IMG_9249Jenn Hart kicked us off, with the launch of her new book of poetry, ‘Watch Your Mouth’. Her poetry is warm, funny, touching, personal and political. She’s engaging in her delivery too – unsurprisingly so, as her old band Vi9781909136991va Zapata were stunning at last year’s LOUD WOMEN Fest. Hope to hear lots more poetry and music from Jenn soon! You can order a copy of the book online direct from Jenn here.

IMG_9259Next up was the charmingly bonkers Velodrome. And what a treat! Orchestrated by Kate Evans, the band was a motley crew of  musician friends she’d assembled that day, some meeting for the first time half an hour before the show, and joined by Kate’s Dad on keyboard. Throughout the set Kate floated between acoustic and electric guitar, and bass,  seemingly at a moment’s whim. Her assembled troupe looked to her for guidance throughout as she led them with nods and winks through the songs. It really shouldn’t have worked … but it definitely did! Kate’s stunning voice held the entire piece together – she sounds more like Kate Bush than Kate Bush does these days. The songs were beautiful, but don’t ask me what they were about – I was too distracted by the animal oven glove backing singers, and unicorn trousers. How exciting that Kate has just joined our all-time faves Dream Nails on bass, and is about to head off on a European tour with them! I’m really intrigued to hear how her voice will fit in with their sound too.

IMG_9270Third act was Wolf Girl, who I’ve been wanting to see for ages – and they were well worth the wait! A really strong set of garagey poppy punk, solidly delivered, and catchy tunes. I particularly enjoyed watching Christabel’s drumming – she was rocking the fuck out, but with such a calm and serene expression. Want to see these again, they deserved a much bigger crowd!

IMG_9282Last on was Hot Sauce Pony, a fairly new band who really should be playing much bigger gigs. Their sound is really unique – I’d like someone more eloquent to describe it for me – but it was all tasty layers of sonic goodness … trip-hopping drums, crunchy bass, chimey guitar, and beautiful soprano vox over the top. Again, really want to see these again in a bigger venue.

A top fun night, lots of friends in, and £22.50 raised in the raffle for Women’s Aid – hurray!

first view: Velodrome drops ‘Steady Girl!’ video

LOUD WOMEN are delighted to reveal the new video just dropped by Velodrome, called “Steady Girl!’.

The power behind Velodrome is Katherine Evans, who tell us: “Are you bored of photos of sullen man-bands? Seen enough pop stars gyrating on top of 4x4s? Then check out the DIY video for my song “Steady Girl”! Starring me and 2 oven gloves, and filmed on location in Tottenham”

Looking forward to seeing Velodrome live this Friday at LOUD WOMEN club at the Hope and Anchor.
