A spotlight interview with Rachel, Riley and Jamy of Newcastle's Gaydar, ahead of their appearance at The Windmill, Brixton on 2 August, and LOUD WOMEN Sunday at Rebellion Festival on 9 August.

Describe your sound in three words.
Radgey, chaotic, catchy

Tell us about your music
Our latest release is ‘Christ I Need A Piss’; it is a cathartic protest song about the trans bathroom debate. It shines a light on trans people’s experiences of trying to navigate day to day life in the UK. You should turn it up because it’s an empowering and informative song that will get you bopping.

‘Jan Got Her Tits Done In Turkey’ came from a story of someone we know who’s friend went to get a boob job in Turkey but then her kidney got stolen while she was there.

What’s your local scene like?
Our local scene is quite small and queer. We like to collaborate with other bands and creative individuals and like to get involved with fundraisers and shows.

If you could rip up the rulebook of the music industry, what’s the first thing you’d rewrite?
That you don’t need to be a man to do it. You don’t need to have all this secret informative to do it. Anyone can make music. If you want to do it you can.

What’s the wildest/strangest thing that’s ever happened at one of your gigs?
There was a human pyramid in our crowd when we played Manchester Punk Fest

What’s the biggest hurdle you’ve faced and how did you overcome it?
Being authentic in a male-dominated industry/scene and powering through it

What’s the proudest moment you’ve had so far as a band/artist?
Getting asked to play Rebellion fest

What’s the strangest gig you’ve ever played?
We played Jarred Up Fest in Sheffield and held the crowd at water pistol point before the gig and chucked bourbon biscuits at willing participants throughout; this was Jamy’s first show with us and the promotor asked us to headline the following year.

Dream lineup: you + three other acts (alive, dead, or imaginary). Who’s on the bill?
Lambrini Girls, Amyl and the Sniffers and Warmduscher

What’s next for you?
We have lots of gigs booked for the coming year whilst working on a new music and sounds with the addition of our new bassist Jamy, and of course Rebellion in August
