Calgary duo Miesha and The Spanks released their third song, ‘Smiling,’ from their upcoming album, Visions. This high-energy track is complete controlled chaos. Garage rock guitar with a gritty edge reminiscent of 90’s grunge, paired with the emotional anchor that is Miesha Louie’s vocals, creates your next summer road trip song you will play on repeat. The track was written as a way for Louie to work through complex emotions and describes that difficult space between smiling through pain and collapsing under the weight of all you are carrying. She describes a particularly tough time she’s gone through in recent years that influenced the song:
“For the last couple of years my mom has been fighting what’s now stage 4 cancer. I’ve been putting on this face that everything’s fine – mostly for my kids, but also just to stay sane. You wouldn’t know she was sick to see her, because she’s just so strong – and of course I know that’s a loaded thing to say, because for all I know, she’s just smiling through it as well.”
‘Smiling’ is a masterclass in how to turn grief and anxiety into a beautiful piece of rock ‘n’ roll. It doesn’t shy away from the darkness of life, but rather it blasts through it with a defiant grin. It’s an incredibly promising look at what’s to come on Visions.
