I had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful Apollonia the lead singer of Frenzee after they supported Piss at The Lexington. Which also happened to be their first time playing in London, and woow what a performance did they give but you can read about that here. She is one of those people that somehow just make you feel comfortable, so whilst my intention was just to praise her on the performance, we ended up chatting, one thing led to another, and it turned out Apollonia was everything LOUD WOMEN stands for. So we ended up filming this interview before their headline show the next day.

Frenzee are a trio raised between Greece and Australia. All this means is that they have a strong Australian accent thanks to their mum but then will surprise you by suddenly speaking Greek to each other. From their dad’s side they have strong ties to Cretan folk music which was balanced with their mum’s taste for rock and Hip-hop, and somehow this has led them to being an incredibly energetic punk-rock band.

Apollonia does not shy away from talking about the disadvantages that women face, especially in Greece, when it comes comes to career options. Everyone is expected to stick to their traditional roles which has led to a lack of women in the creative industries like music and men being raised with strong traditional patriarchal beliefs. A song ‘Pink Tax’ is clear representation of where the band stands in these beliefs.

With Apollonia being very creative and highly talented they have taken a very DIY take on their latest single “Keep Coming My Way” music video by making it with stop animation. It is great seeing someone put so much time in to something that these days is a lost art form.
