There is a feeling that many of us have experienced of being in a different place to someone even whilst holding their gaze. Australian musician Asha Jefferies explores this theme in her new single ‘Backwards Baby’. With a slightly melancholic melody introducing us to a story of loving someone that is not ready to move forwards. It is slowly transformed by an electronic twist as if providing an upbeat hope for a future in which you are not being held back.

This intimate song writing style she creates a deeper connection with the listener as you go on a journey that you may relate to. But even if you don’t, the song is written in a way that the chorus repeats in your head long after its done playing.

I find knowing what the song means to the artist really interesting, sometimes I had listened to something with an entirely different perspective. And whilst that is the beauty of music, it is also nice to be able to view the lyrics from the mindset in which it was written in. These stories can be extremely raw and vulnerable, but also have come from a place of growth, joy and play.

Asha says, “Writing this song helped me confront how tragic and difficult it is to love someone who is stuck in the past. As painful as it was to witness, I came to realise it was a pattern beyond my control, and that sometimes the way people treat you has nothing to do with you: ‘there goes my backwards baby.’”
