Adelaide punks Witch Spit are heading to the UK for their first international tour, playing The Windmill in Brixton on 2 August before joining the LOUD WOMEN stage at Rebellion Festival on 9 August.
Paige sat down with Team LOUD WOMEN’s Rosa Brown, currently studying at the BRIT School, to discuss the band’s third album Public Execution, touring with her wife and bandmate Alex, and why the current version of Witch Spit finally feels like the right one.
“It’s actually an album that, if I didn’t write it, I would listen to,” Paige says of Public Execution. “I don’t normally like listening to my own music, but I really, really love this album.”
The conversation travels back through Paige’s musical upbringing, from Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin to discovering her dad’s forgotten L7 CD, then finding Hole and Bikini Kill. For Paige, punk offered the freedom to say exactly what she felt, with energy taking priority over technical perfection.
She also gives Rosa the inside story on Adelaide’s frequently underestimated heavy music community, packed with diverse, feminist and non-male-fronted bands. Plus, there are stories of microphone-related dental damage, getting booed in a concrete skate bowl and discovering that a dramatic exit is considerably less effective when you cannot climb out afterwards.
As for Witch Spit’s Rebellion set:
“What we lack in skill, we will make up for in energy. It’ll be really fast, loud and obnoxious, and hopefully enjoyable.”
