North-East indie-punks Fortitude Valley have released their new single ‘Sunshine State’ – the band’s first release since singing to Specialist Subject Records, and the first taste of their forthcoming album, Part Of The Problem, Baby, out 1 August. It’s three minutes of summer-tinged punk, with their trademark catchy hooks providing the perfect backdrop for the coming-of-age story told within the lyrics.
Vocalist and songwriter Laura Kovic had this to say about the track:
“Lyrically, the song is about moving away from Australia and dealing with those feelings. I found some old journals from when I was a teenager, and they made me reflect on how much I’d changed as a person. There were things about myself that I’d forgotten, but it was clear how much I’d always wanted to move to the UK. I was so keen to get away! From such a beautiful place! So the song is like: I’m going back to the Sunshine State to find my younger, more melodramatic self and catch-up with her.”
The song is accompanied by a beautiful DIY video, shot by the band themselves in Queensland, Australia, that perfectly matches the tracks sun-drenched high-energy vibe.
