Brooklyn-based indie artist Gemma Laurence shares new single/video ‘Hedonist’ – another look into her upcoming album, We Were Bodies Underwater, out this July via MainFactor and Mad Dragon Records.
‘Hedonist’ is a sultry anthem where Laurence falls in love with herself again after a breakup.
“I wanted to write a song about being completely self-indulgent. It’s about giving myself the love and attention that I usually give to others, channeling it all back in towards myself and really enjoying it. I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to make myself smaller for other people and worrying about being ‘too much.’ This song really throws that in the garbage and lights it on fire. I wrote it in the aftermath of a breakup, but it’s not really about the person who broke my heart at all — it’s about me; it’s about falling in love with myself again.”

The accompanying video, co-written with director Sophia Alaniz and co-choreographed with professional line dancer Julia Wortman, features a powerful queer-femme cast.
“The song is all about learning how to take up more space and be louder about your needs and your desires. So it was important to me that I work with a cast and crew of queer folks and womxn on this project: people that have been conditioned to make themselves smaller, to minimize their needs for others. We’re taking that back. One queer line dancing music video at a time!”
