Manchester-based punk duo The Sewer Cats are bringing their explosive, punchy sound to Manchester Punk Festival this year, and you’re not going to want to miss them!
Read on to see what vocalist/drummer Cass has to say…
Firstly, how did you both meet and when was The Sewer Cats formed?
We’ve known each other since we were kids, and we were in bands together as teenagers. We always wanted to do something as a duo, so about 5 years ago we started jamming together. We initially thought it would be an instrumental type of band, but when I started screaming over the top of Josh’s riffs, The Sewer Cats was born.
For anyone not familiar with your music, how would you describe your sound?
High energy riot grrrl meets hardcore punk, served with a wall of fuzz. We’re easily bored, so we like to mix in as many different sounds as possible – from post-rock to grunge and even a bit of country… anything goes really.
If you had to recommend one of your songs to a new listener, which one would you
choose?
‘Boo Hoo!’ communicates what we’re about in a nutshell. It’s a fast 2-minute stomper that’s all about taking up space as a woman in the music scene by leaning into your ‘big pussy energy!’
What can we expect from your set at MPF?
Lots of noise, feral energy and raucousness. And hopefully a stage invasion like last time we played! MPF is a time where you see all your DIY punk friends from across the UK, so we always like to play a set of songs that celebrates that.
Are there any other bands on the line-up you’re particularly looking forward to seeing?
Bratakus, Bruise Control, Grail Guard, Coughin Vicars, Pussy Liquor, Other Half, Follow Your Dreams, Wreaking Joy. We’re sure there will be loads more bands that we’ll see at random too, that’s the joy of a festival like MPF.
What else are you up to this year?
Our second album Obnoxious came out in September and we’ll be continuing to promote it with gigs and tours throughout 2025. We’ll be touring Germany in March with our TNSrecords label-mates ALLDEEPENDS, so we’ll all be match fit when MPF comes around! We’re also putting on our own all-dayer with The Latchkey Kids in Manchester in September. It’ll be a diverse mix of bands and a fun time. No doubt people will spot us giving out flyers at MPF!
And finally, is there anything else you’d like to add?
If you’ve not been to MPF before, you’ll find it’s a really friendly and welcoming festival. Be ready to get involved in the chaos of crowd-surfing and human pyramids. But don’t worry, there will be someone there to pick you up when you fall!
Thank you so much to Cass for answering these questions. Manchester Punk Festival takes place 18-20 April 2025 – full details and tickets here
