Gina Birch is back with Doom Monger, a track that perfectly captures the feeling of wanting peace while the world goes to hell. It’s from her upcoming album Trouble, dropping July 11 on Third Man Records. Birch explains:
“This is about the world going to hell in a handcart, feeling overwhelmed, but yearning for peace and happiness.”
And honestly, who isn’t feeling that?
As a co-founder of The Raincoats, one of the most influential post-punk bands ever, Birch has been shaping the alternative music scene for decades. Her fearless creativity and punk spirit are still alive and kicking in Doom Monger – a track that reminds us why she’s a legend in the first place.
The song delivers exactly that chaotic energy with a propulsive bassline and a relentless drum machine beat. But it’s not just about the chaos – it’s about finding a way through it.
The video, directed by Birch and Dean Chalkley, is a playful yet surreal masterpiece. Birch recalls,
“At art school I had made a 16mm film made up of nine Super 8 screens… I wanted to make a colourful fun video for ‘Doom Monger’, that had an element of humour to it.”
Expect punches, outstretched arms, and frames layered in unexpected ways—because why not?
Catch Doom Monger and more from Trouble, a collection of tracks packed with feminist rebellion, introspection, and unapologetic creativity. And, for extra fun, catch Birch live this fall as she joins Miki Berenyi Trio on their North American tour starting October 10.
