Ahead of Trousdale’s new album Growing Pains, out this Friday, Georgia Greene answered a few questions with LOUD WOMEN’s US Editor Reva May!
1. Share the inspiration behind Growing Pains:
Growing Pains is inspired by our experience in relationships, pursuing a career in music, and the transformation that comes from change. It can often feel like the music industry is a never ending uphill climb and it can be hard to grasp how far you’ve come.
We wrote the title track after a long tour, feeling exhausted and energized, and found ourselves discussing how with every dream met or bucket list item checked off, we experienced a new set of unexpected adjustments. We were tickled by the idea of comparing these adjustment periods to the “growing pains” we all experienced in adolescence. While they’re uncomfortable, they often lead to transformation.
Other tracks on the album are inspired by similar themes of discomfort, change, fear, and rebirth. Calling the album Growing Pains felt very fitting to us.
2. Describe your writing process:
Our writing process is jam packed! We’re all so different and honestly have such different writing processes, but when it comes to Trousdale, there’s an excitement in bringing songs to the band. There’s a, “I hope Quinn and Lauren like this,” and “I know they’re going to make this better.”
There’s no lack of ideas between the three of us, in fact, there’s almost too many to sift through! Because of this, we each shared individual Dropbox folders with each other filled with personal starts, finished songs and even midnight musings. We worked on every start that anyone felt strongly about, and believe it or not, there are still some we couldn’t get to! We also love bringing our favorite writers into the mix for some extra inspiration and creativity, and we had the privilege of working with so many of them on this record.
When making Growing Pains, our first priority was to honor each of our artistic styles and stories, and going into it with that in mind made this writing process feel very fair, sustainable and inspiring!
3. What is your favourite track from Growing Pains?
I personally listen to every song on this record all the time, but I’d say right now I’m vibing with ‘Save Me.’ It’s so upbeat and groovy, a big f*** you to anyone who gives you unsolicited advice. Musically, it’s just difficult enough that I can see myself being excited to perform it for many years to come. I’m also moved by ‘Warm Shoulder, Cold Heart’ as it marks a painful time in my life, but also reminds me that I got through it.
4. What is your biggest ‘growing pain’ as a person and artist?
My biggest ‘growing pain’ as a person and artist right now is getting used to this “on-the-go” lifestyle. Being on the road is so rewarding and I can say I’m truly living my childhood dream, but the constant change of scenery can also make it difficult to find peace and grounding.
5. What are your on the road essentials for your upcoming tour?
In order of importance: my Breathe Right nasal strips (for sleep), eye mask (for sleep), ear plugs (for sleep), airpods (for vibes), an incredible series (usually TV but really going to try for a good book this time too), and enough extra room in my suitcase to allow for incredible thrifting along the way!
