Boston’s Darling Effigy just released their debut single, ‘Hysterical’.
Hysteria comes from the Greek root “hystera” meaning uterus. Hysterical is, of course, then exhibiting symptoms of hysteria. This historical medical term was often used to describe women who had a variety of “symptoms” like irritability, anxiety, emotional outbursts, or having sexual desire. Darling Effigy gained insight from this definition for this song, clearly with lyrics like :
Miss, you’re hysterical
And hormonal,
Hate to break it to you
But your pain is normal…
Then it occurs to me
Am I being dramatic?
Am I really suffering, or is it psychosomatic?
I start to wonder if there’s something that I missed
Did I overreact, or am I being gaslit?
These lyrics turn a word used to dismiss women into an empowering, riotous anthem. It pairs heavy, driving riffs and catchy grunge melodies with a punchy, punk energy. The vocal delivery from bassist and singer Jules Ozone is heavy on the bite, sarcasm, and Riot Grrl influence, with verses delivered with a rhythmic cadence that builds tension and then releases into the roaring, high-energy chorus.
Ultimately, ‘Hysterical’ isn’t just a strong debut- it’s a loud, unapologetic declaration from a band that clearly knows exactly who they are.
