Cor de Lux return in style with The Cringe, a post-punk blast built to leave a mark and tear through everything in its path. The single, taken from Year of the Horse, their first album for Ipecac Recordings, out on 18 September, makes its intentions clear from the start: relentless guitars, sharp drums and an ever-present bassline that gives the track its distinctive atmosphere.
The song opens with a bright, repetitive, almost hypnotic riff, with a distortion that at times recalls Sonic Youth’s “Sugar Kane”, though Cor de Lux push it into darker, denser territory. “The Cringe” starts from post-punk, but drags it somewhere heavier, noisier and more physical. At its most abrasive, it may bring METZ to mind, thanks to the driving rhythm and guitars that take up plenty of space. At the same time, it also keeps a sharp garage-rock edge, close to The Paranoyds, which brings out the track’s more melodic side.
In the middle section, the track changes direction: the guitars grow denser, the vocals move into the background and a shoegaze-like element starts to emerge. Everything becomes more expansive, but the pressure remains, before the drums, bass and an almost spoken vocal delivery bring the song back to the front.

But “The Cringe” really comes into its own when that sonic tension meets its political charge. The song takes aim at materialism, inequality and the obscenity of an economic elite that enriches itself at the expense of others. The line “I make a dollar a day”, which bassist John Bliven has explained as a reference to CEOs paying themselves token salaries while amassing fortunes in shares, neatly sums up the core of the track: a system designed so that a select few can keep accumulating wealth without playing by the same rules as everyone else. The title itself sets the tone: “The Cringe” suggests rejection, discomfort and unease in the face of something all too obvious. The lyrics and the accompanying video move in the same direction, with images of loss of control, pain and violence that let the anger seep into both the words and the sound.
The result is a standout track that blends post-punk, atmospheric noise and shoegaze density without settling into a single label. Political frustration, garage-rock energy and constant tension keep its wildest side alive. Here, Cor de Lux sound like a band entering a new phase while holding on firmly to their identity.
