Jehnny Beth - by Johnny Hostile

Jehnny Beth, a French artist based in London recently released a new song ‘Look at Me’ in collaboration with Mike Patton. It’s a bit of a mix of alternative indie and grunge genres paired with a music video inspired by the movie Taxi Driver. With Jehnny putting herself in the shoes of Robert De Niro:

“I represent De Niro’s character who embodies this lonely outcast who doesn’t have a place in the world”

Known for her work as the frontwoman of Savages, Jehnny Beth brings the same intensity and presence to her solo music. From the start, ‘Look At Me’ feels urgent and unapologetic, pulling the listener in, while the repetition of the lyrics “look at me” grows increasingly intense. It almost acts as a challenge of how long you can hold her gaze before it becomes uncomfortable.

This song is all about attention seeking being posed as heroism, blurring the line between vulnerability and performance. Afterall, with so many ways for people to share their lives its becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate between what is real and what is built for your easy consumption. In reflection, Jehnny Beth reveals a song that explores deception and its impact on those vulnerable to the subtle pull of manipulative, misleading ideologies.

“it’s about the modern sellers of truth, who share their opinion online on how to ‘better oneself’, giving an illusion of control but all they really want is to be the centre of attention.”
