Icelandic musician Gyða Valtýsdottir showcases her well-established career with single ‘Mother Pearl’, released in preparation for her upcoming album of the same title, due 20 March 2026.
Classical training and modern stylings mix with film and theatre techniques to create music that cannot be described by genre and its relative constraints.
Of the song, Valtýsdottir says:
“Life is a miracle, existence is a miracle, reality is a miracle, technology is a miracle, creation is a miracle. The song was co-composed by a miracle, effortlessly with a dear friend Kjartan Sveinsson (Sigur Rós), the last song to be written for the album & it ended up becoming the title song.”
With fragile yet fulfilling tones, as an audience we are truly given a sense of miraculous etherality. The atmosphere surrounds you with a shiny and delicate undercurrent – quite pearl-like.
This encompassing feeling continues with the interesting use of panning in the accompaniment. Elements of the soundscape reflect around you, while others remain constant, creating a heady blend of music.
Other aspects I particularly enjoy of Valtýsdottir and Sneinsson’s writing are the range of notes used by the cello and the distinctive full-bodied sound that parallels the piano while beautifully contrasting the vocal tones.
Finally, the different timbres of the vocal lines used together (a standard vocal line harmonised by a breathier version of the same line) is sublime and really adds to the ethereal, miraculous feeling.
Whilst I eagerly await the full Mother Pearl album, I would absolutely recommend giving this piece a listen, even if it sounds like something a bit different for you. We could all use a touch of the graceful beauty Valtýsdottir brings to the music world in these uncertain times.
