A glorious mix of grunge and shoegaze, ‘Big Hips’ is the latest single from New York band MX LONELY‘s debut album All Monsters, scheduled for release on 20 February 2026.
Formed in 2020, the band members are synthesist/vocalist Rae Haas, guitarist Jake Harms and bassist Gabriel Garman. Together they released the album Dog under the name v0idb0ys before renaming to MX Lonely in 2022. Since then they have released EPs Cadonia (2022) and Spit (2024) and are now triumphantly returning with their new single.
Sirens at the start of ‘Big Hips’ give an atmospheric feeling of New York, before the guitar and vocals kick in with echoes of The Pixies. The verse meanders its way through lyrics and guitars reminiscent of Soundgarden or Sonic Youth, before launching into an emotionally charged chorus where Haas repeatedly screams “big hips for a boy”.
“‘Big Hips’ is a self-mocking celebration of youthful masculinity. Puberty imbues a sense of dread for everyone, but especially trans people,” explains Haas. “For me, the onset of feminine curves was met with a sort of voyeurism I didn’t feel I was made to be proud of. ‘Big hips’ were something that happened to you rather than something you owned. The song recontextualizes the dysphoria of my youth in the way young boys would jovially proclaim the size of their phalluses (whether it was true or not). It’s a big dick joke.”
The video has a retro theme, partly set in a primary school where the muted colour scheme evokes jaded memories of adolescence. The song reminds me of my own teenage years, of being at college in the 90’s where we would skip class to listen to L7 in the pub while we battled our own feelings on gender.
‘Big Hips’ is a spirited anthem that reflects on trans adolescence and dealing with gender dysphoria, and I’m looking forward to listening to the new album All Monsters.
