Nashville indie-rock powerhouse meg elsier lets us peek behind the curtain in an expanded release of her latest album on spittake(deluxe) via Bright Antenna Records.
These B-sides, these demos, this deluxe—it’s a celebration of all the little choices that made ‘spittake’ what it is. Creating is such a vulnerable playground. It’s a place to make mistakes. It’s a place to try these characters and voices and performances without anyone watching. I wanted to show how much beauty can exist in the unfinished and imperfect.”

After covering elsier’s original spittake album, I actually shrieked with joy when she announced the deluxe edition. And, as always, she delivers. ‘run [old song]’ is a stand-out track that shows audiences a new facet of elsier’s work. With vocal distortion and steadfast lyrics, ‘run [old song]’ strikes a universal vein. One that will release you or send you to tears, this song exudes a jubilant rawness.
‘forlyleinsanfrancisco[demo]’ is a change of tempo and a slightly unplugged shift from the original release. Cutting the lyrics down and ending a minute earlier gives this version an exasperated feel rather than the stream-of-consciousness vibe of the initial track. Silky smooth with coarse lyrics, ‘forlyleinsanfrancisco[demo]’, elsier shares a new angle within her sonic mirror.
‘AM 180 [live]’ is an even grungier cover of the track by Grandaddy. Elsier’s delicate vocals give the song a newfound glow, and the track was a welcome surprise addition to the deluxe release.
Still overturning stones of her creativity and unleashing brilliance, elsier’s spittake (deluxe) is a gifted glimpse of her musical vision in all of its stages of bloom.
