Sally-Anne Hickman, a seasoned pro with a guitar in hand and a mic in front of her, is stepping into the spotlight with her new solo project, Rival Queens. The single ‘Right Now’ from her debut EP Crown and Conquer hits like a grunge-fueled freight train, drawing on the raw power of ‘90s rock with a fresh, modern edge.
Hickman’s no stranger to the big stage – as a session guitarist with the likes of Maya Lakhani she’s played at iconic venues like The 100 Club and the Royal Albert Hall, and had her moment on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury. But she’s also more than just a guitarist. She’s a member of Lips Choir, blending her voice with a collective of bold, boundary-pushing performers. And if you caught LOUD WOMEN Fest 2024, you might also have seen her sitting sketching the bands – she drew some stunning illustrations of the bands who graced the stage. Yes, she can draw and rock – talk about a multi-talented force.
On ‘Right Now,’ Hickman blends gritty riffs with raw emotion, delivering a song that’s as introspective as it is loud. It’s a perfect snapshot of the defiance and drive that fuels this new chapter.
