We’re looking ahead to the LOUD WOMEN stage at Rebellion Festival this summer, and this time it’s to get to know Bath four-piece Quick Romance! Their vocalist, Matilda Scotland, sat down to talk to us about how they formed and why you should all check them out…
How did you all meet?
We kinda all knew each other from around town, is the short answer! Bath is a small city already, it’s music scene is smaller still. Gabe (who plays bass) and I were at college together, I knew Ollie (our drummer) through his younger sister Cherry, and Hayden (who plays guitar) and I met when his other band, Hektics, played at Young, Loud & Snotty, the club night I help put on. Quick Romance formed properly sometime at the beginning of 2024, although it had been slooowly creeping outta the shadows for quite a while before that!
How would you describe your sound?
Like a marriage between X-Ray Spex and Fatal Microbes, with The Shangri-La’s as bridesmaids. Like a fight at a school disco in 1976.
If you had to recommend one of your songs to a new listener, which one would you choose?
Brian Jones’s Hair. It has a special place in our hearts ‘cos it’s our first official release! It was also the first proper song I ever wrote, so it actually predates the band! It’s just good rock-n-rollin’ fun, if I may say so myself. It sorta represents everything we stand for.
What can we expect from your set at Rebellion?
Angels with dirty faces. A blistering aural attack of squirming, squealing punk rawwwk baby! Yeah! Hayden and Gabe have been polishing their guitar-clad dance moves, I’ve got some kitschy costume ideas brewing, and, if we’re all very lucky, Ollie’s gonna let me doll him up in full Wizzard-esque splendour.
You’re playing the LOUD WOMEN stage this year. What would you say to someone who maybe doesn’t understand why we still need things like LOUD WOMEN?
I’d tell ‘em they’ve gotta realise how BORING it’d be with no women up on stage. Punk rock works best when ANYONE can do it. That’s the whole point. Besides, no one understands filth and fury like a girl does.
Are there any other bands on the line-up you’re particularly looking forward to seeing?
Oh, there are so many! Slaughter & The Dogs, The Dollheads, Swell Maps, Protex, Las Fockin’ Bitches, 999, Split Dogs, The Damned, The Undertones, to name but a few. Oh my god, and Slady!!
What else are you up to this year?
As well as playing the LOUD WOMEN show at The Lexington on 3 August, we’re playing with The Dollheads (fellow Loud Women!) in Bath on the 2nd August and we’ll be at Clerkenwell Festival on the 24th August.
And finally, is there anything else you’d like to add?
We’d like to thank you guys again for the opportunity to join the lovely LW lot, and to tell the people to keep their eyes peeled for more QUICK ROMANCE soon! Now we’ve landed, we’re going nowhere fast!
Thank you so much to Matilda for answering these questions!
