Manchester’s Brain Leak release their debut single ‘Trying’ – an open-hearted guitar lead indie track laying bare songwriter Tara-Gabriella Engelhardt’s battle with her attachment issues.
The lyrics are raw and honest. The music see-saws between calm and manic, giving it an uncomfortable edge. This echoes the back and forth of her emotions. Her vocal delivery has got a quality similar to Porridge Radio.
Engelhardt says:
“’Trying’ is a song about attachment and the extreme emotions that can come along with it. I feel things very deeply and the song instantly expresses that I don’t just feel a standard emotion, I tend to feel the amplified version of it. I remember writing the song almost in one go after a Narcotics Anonymous meeting, where I’d talked about the feeling of being on a seesaw. I didn’t know how to just stay in the middle, didn’t have a clue what balance felt like, without a crutch. Challenging emotional situations without any kind of crutch was very unnerving and felt completely alien.”
The song succeeds in giving an insight into this. Its an exciting debut release, we look forward to hearing more from them soon.
Brain Leak are a supergroup of sorts. Engelhardt has recruited Orielles drummer Sidonie Hand-Halford. Alongside her are Peaness guitarist Jess Branney and former Working Mens Club guitarist Giulia Bonometti. If you can’t wait to hear more from Engelhardt, she is also a member of tipped trio Adjustments.
