Austrian four-piece GARDENS have just released their indie pop debut Waves

Out now, the album’s dream pop sound is combined with heavy bass at stages, as well as gorgeous harmonies that sound paradoxically light compared to the lyrical journey. It’s a deep look into the singer Luca Celine Müller’s soul, evident in the depth of pieces such as ‘Shift’ and the title track ‘Flaws’.

Luca and Peter Benedikt Mathis became friends over social media before realising they went to the same school. Peter had actually played Luca’s guitar at a party she threw. They formed the band with Patrick Stieger and Laura Keiblinger, who provide vital nourishment and breathing space for Luca to navigate the complicated emotions that have informed her songs.

“It’s like writing a diary, or just writing your thoughts down. That’s what everybody tells you; it’s what therapists have told me. Just write it down, so it gets out of your head and onto paper. And I think that’s what happened with these songs: manically writing lyrics when I was riding the metro, and afterward already feeling lighter because it got a new space. So it doesn’t have to live inside my head anymore.”
