Manhattan four-piece cumgirl8 have released their futuristic, post-punk fuelled debut album, the 8th cumming – out now on 4AD.
According to cumgirl8 lore, the band met 8000 years ago in a sex chat in another metaverse. Their previous EPs have told the story of their birth (cumgirl8), death (RIPcumgirl8), and afterlife (phantasea pharm). Described by the band as a “utopian, chaotic Greta Thunberg fever dream”, the 8th cumming is the story of their resurrection.
Recorded live, and entirely on analogue, the album opens with recent single ‘Karma Police‘ (not a cover – Radiohead could never), kicking things off with a robotic announcement of:
“We are the modern cunt positive anti-reason unbounded unleashed unforgiving”
What follows is a chaotic and unpredictable journey through what it means to just exist in the modern world. Cyberfeminism is a theme that runs throughout the album, as the band encourages us to examine our relationships with the online and physical world from their apocalyptic vantage point. ‘mercy’, for example, is a new-wave-flavoured story of sexting, and the potentially alienating aspect of combining the sensual with the cybernetic.
‘uti’ is a hyper-speed freakout of a song, and I love it. With lyrics like
“I gotta BV-thing / From a fingering-ing… I think I feel a yeast string / From a cunniling-ing”
2024 is the year I went from not knowing any songs about having a UTI, to knowing two absolute bangers on the subject (the other song is by Twat Union, check them out too!).
the 8th cumming is an exciting release from an equally as exciting band. By combining elements of post-punk, electroclash, industrial, and avant-garde with a raw punk energy, cumgirl8 has created an album that is refreshing, thought-provoking, and also a lot of fun. Rest assured, with bands like cumgirl8, music will never be boring.
