London DIY-punk trio Girls Like Us made their Rebellion debut last year, and are back this year to tear up the Arena stage.
If you’re not familiar with GLU, it’s time to read on and get acquainted!
For anyone not familiar with your music, how would you describe your sound?
Amelia: Spiteful, mean, manipulative and nasty.
Jaz: Not for incels?
Yusuf: Feral, yet charming, and surprisingly sophisticated.
If you had to recommend one of your songs to a new listener, which one would it be?
Amelia: One from our upcoming new album – Sleep Jeans, or maybe Spyral, actually.
Jaz: Spoonfed is probably the one I’d recommend that’s already out from way back when. Off our EP, Toothache and High Pressure are personal faves. New album is so hard to choose from – I love all the songs!
Yusuf: Probably something off our new album. Like Heaven Is A Television or Sleep Jeans. High Pressure is my favourite song on the previous EP.
You played Rebellion for the first time last year, how was that experience?
Amelia: Delusional! We partied way too hard on all of the days so playing our actual set was a bit of a blur. We had the best time though, and it was amazing to hang out with so many of our friends over the weekend.
Jaz: Yeah it was really fun, definitely a highlight for all of us, even playing the warm up gig beforehand was amazing because you can sense everyone there is just high-energy to be there for Rebellion. We’ve seen some great videos of us from both sets that people have posted on YouTube. We pulled a huge crowd for our Introducing Stage performance, I didn’t want it to end.
Yusuf: Fun! I came home with a Hawaiian shirt.
Are there any bands you’re particularly excited to see over the weekend?
Amelia: Split Dogs are gonna be fucking amazing. We’ve seen and played with them a few times, and they’re honestly just magnetic to watch. You genuinely cannot peel your eyes away from them.
Jaz: Clobber are massive and also lovely fellas! I’m sure there were tons of others I’m forgetting right now but can’t wait to bump into everyone again this year!
Yusuf: Split Dogs, The Ramonas, Gogol Bordello, Strung Out, Sourflake, Rumkicks, Stiff Little Fingers, Smoking Popes, Love Equals Death, Pete Bentham and the Dinner Ladies, Clobber…
What else are you up to this year?
Amelia: It’s taken us absolutely forever to do this album as we’ve been doing it 100% DIY so as soon as we finally finish it we’re then onto music videos and other cool shit.
Jaz: It wouldn’t have taken so long if Amelia didn’t have to cough every time I hit record.
Yusuf: Mixing, mixing and more mixing. And Pokémon go.
Girls Like Us will be performing on the Arena stage, on the Friday of the festival – tickets and info here.
