Since forming in 2019, The Meffs have exploded onto the UK punk scene, and will be making their third appearance at Rebellion Festival this year. Known for their raucous live shows and political lyrics, they have already become a favourite fixture for many Rebellion regulars and, let’s just say, their reputation is deserved.

Read on to see what Lily (vocals/guitar) had to say about making up their own genre, opening for NOFX on their farewell tour, and what else the band will be up to this year.

For anyone not familiar with your music, how would you describe your sound?

Gritty, no-nonsense noise. I sing about society and what happens around me. There’s so many subgenres of punk now but musically we don’t seem to fall into any so we made up our own genre – Britpunk. You heard it here first.

If you had to recommend one of your songs to a new listener, which one would it be?

That’s hard! Our newest single, CLOWNS, is going down really well live. Broken Britain, Broken Brains does too. Wasted on Women is important though – it’s tiring being expected to fit in so those lyrics, as simple as they seem, are ones I want everyone to hear. That’s three. Three is better than one.

You’ve posted a few studio pics on Instagram, can we expect to hear some new songs from your set this year?

You know it. We’ve just started adding in a couple of new ones into the set – F R S F and EVERYTHING’S GONE. Spoiler, the new album is out later this year!

You’ve been opening for NOFX on their farewell tour. How has that been?

Mad. The best experience of our time as a band. We’re halfway through and we’re not looking forward to it ending. We’ve got lifelong mates out of this tour though.

Are there any band you’re particularly excited to see over the weekend?

We’ll definitely catch our mates The Drowns and Meryl Streek. Usually I know who I want to see at a festival but this time I’m going to see where I end up.

What else are you up to this year?

Alongside Rebellion we’ve got loads of festivals like Punk Rock Holiday, Sziget, 2000 Trees and Back to Future. Doing some work with Music Venue Trust. Then tours with Frank Turner and Alice Cooper, before our new album drops. Heavy year of touring and we love it!

The Meffs will be performing on the Empress stage on the Thursday of Rebellion Festival this year –  tickets and info here.
