Millie Manders‘ name is hard to miss within the UK punk scene. Even if you haven’t listened to her, either as a solo artist or as the frontwoman of Millie Manders and the Shutup, chances are you’re at least familiar with her reputation for bringing strong vocals, politically-fused lyrics, and irresistibly catchy melodies to the stage.
Read on to see what Millie has to say!
For anyone not familiar with your music, how would you describe your sound?
I have always called it cross-genre punk, but we get labelled as Pop Punk and Ska Punk quite often too, and I’m not mad about either. Pop Punk with Horns was one… they all work.
If you had to recommend one of your songs to a new listener, which one would it be?
I think, probably, Your Story or Not Okay – they are two of our most “sung along with” songs, and encompass most of our sounds, I think? Plus I like them, so hopefully a new listener would too haha!
You’ve played Rebellion Festival a few times now. What does Rebellion Festival mean to you?
Rebellion Festival gave me some of my biggest stage breaks and has believed in my music since pretty early on. It always feels like coming home. We get to see loads of bands we know, so many friends, and we discover loads of new music! It’s a hug fest. What’s not to love?
Your new album comes out 2nd August. Can we expect a lot of new material in your set this year?
We already have the singles in the set, and one of the unreleased tracks. We will be doing an album tour as well, so yes, more of the new material will start to creep into the set list, for sure! I think you’ll hear more new songs in the acoustic set, rather than the full band one this year.
Are there any bands you’re particularly excited to see over the weekend?
MANY. Ramona’s Tea Party toured with us last year and I cannot wait to see them again. I missed Noah and the Loners last year, so they are a must! Plus Voodoo Radio, Yur Mum, Carol Hodge, Air Drawn Dagger, Snayx, and Arch Femesis.
What else are you up to this year?
We have a bunch of festivals including Vegan Campout (SO EXCITED!), two Stone Valley locations, Hand Fest and Cercus, and we will be doing our album tour at the end of this year.
Millie Manders will be performing twice at Rebellion Festival this year – one set as a full band, and a second solo set on the acoustic stage. Both sets will be on the Saturday of the festival – tickets and info here.
