Millie Manders & the Shutup + Voodoo Radio at Wroot Village Hall, Doncaster – 20 April 2024

Millie Manders and the Shutup are an energetic, extremely talented, and engaging punk rock band who genuinely look like they love being together.

I continue to be impressed by this band, their message, and how they deliver it; they walk their talk, and they have a lot to say.

Millie has a wonderfully varied vocal range. From sweet melodies to guttural death-metal rage, you can’t help but be drawn in and immersed in their outrage. Songs like the massive earworm ‘Bitter’ are fierce, coherent and have relevant lyrics. There’s a #metoo trigger warning, and compassionate cries for others’ suffering in this world in ‘Can I Get Off‘, all accompanied by intense rifts, beats, and a bass line to bounce you higher and kick-off.

Respect to them for championing Safe Gigs For Women; Tonic Music mental health support and training; #transrightsarehumanrights and #freePalestine.

Voodoo Radio are the reason you should never miss the support act.

Paige and Tony are a remarkable daughter and father from Cumbria, teaming up to make excellent noises.

Punchy songs like ‘Stupid Humans’ and ‘Basic Bitch’ and banter about not taking life too seriously are delivered with bouncy drum beats from Paige, and Tony wringing the neck of his grandaddy Gibson like the seasoned pro he is.

Articulate lyrics and vocals that channel the great female rock singers of the 70’s, and impressive raw rifts, feel like old friends. I have to agree with Tom Robinson, they won’t be a support act for long.

Millie Manders and The Shutup’s EP Wake Up, Shut Up, Work is out 2 August. Find them on Bandcamp

Voodoo Radio’s EP Stupid Humans is available on Holy Dotage Records

I've 30 years of empty Marmite jars on my kitchen unit. If that doesn't speak volumes about me, then it definitely shouts it. Neurospicy winning.
