Efa Supertramp's Crux Festival preview continues with an interview with Waterflower, one of the innovative AV artists who will be showcased at the event on 13–14 April at Rich Mix.

WATERFLOWER (Riga, LATVIA)

What attracts you to working audio-visually?

I have two main professions daily: multimedia designer and musician. Waterflower shows are the only place in my life where I can fully channel these two practices. I am super grateful for the existence of Crux, ever since I first heard about it in 2018. Plus, I think there is something super special about working with music as an audiovisual medium, channelling not just sound, but a visual representation of the music.

What can people expect from your performance at Crux festival?

The best way to describe me is: like a chaotic Bjork. I will be mostly playing digiplantcore, working on tracks for my upcoming album, where I use digital hardcore and live improvised melodies made from mushrooms and plants to channel the frustration of dying nature. We are living in the age of extinction, this is a scientifically proven fact.

You often play in London, what is it that keeps you bringing you back to the UK from Latvia?

I am a solo artist based in Riga, Latvia, who tours a lot because I come from a very small country with a limited audience. I really enjoy performing to audiences in the UK, because they really get into my vibe, my message and most importantly UK audiences listen to my lyrics. Touring has made me feel the difference when English native speakers listen to music in English, (for them it’s often the lyrics that hit first), instead of melody hitting first (which is more how music is perceived here and in mainland Europe). To be honest, I don’t really like it very much in the UK, but what keeps on bringing me back is awesome attentive people in the audiences, great event organizers, and my friends I’ve made here.
