Out today, our #trackoftheday is Charley Stone’s ‘A Scream’ – taken from forthcoming DIY-produced album Here Comes the Actual Band, which will be out 29 May. It’s a Stone cold classic – epic swirly guitars and charming vocals bring Charley’s brilliant songwriting to life. The Buzzcocks meets Belly.
Stone is very much a pillar of the DIY scene, loved and respected by all who know her, and best known perhaps for being in all of the bands. An incomplete and non-chronological list off the top of my head: Sleeper, Desperate Journalist, Joanne Joanne, Spy51, Gay Dad, and (with a name also referenced in A Scream) Frantic Spiders.
“As a child, when given a choice I opted only for the black crayon, and every work was an iteration of an intensely-intense ball of scrawl. When parents and teachers asked over and over ‘…but what is it?’ I used to reluctantly say ‘spider’, while inwardly scorning their attempts to reduce my expression of the inexpressible to some figurative nonsense. In some ways, perhaps This was an attempt to show the same thing but in a different media. Who can say?”
Charley Stone will be performing (complete with the Actual Band – including Team LOUD WOMEN’s very own Kris Smith on ridiculously impressive bass) at International Women’s Day Fest which we are co-hosting on 9 March at The Venue, Bucks. In fact she’ll be on double guitar duties, also taking to the stage that day with Desperate Journalist. Get your tickets here!
