Today sees the release of ‘Headphones’ by IDestroy, to coincide with International Women’s Day, and which will strike a massive chord with anyone and everyone who has ever walked home with a fear that they were being followed. It’s our #trackoftheday today!
The opening lines of the song…
I Wanna Walk Home By Myself
I Wanna Feel Safe In The Dark
…set the tone for what ‘Headphones’ press release rightly calls “(an anthem capturing) the universal desire for safety at night time”. Everyone who reads this knows that nobody should have to go about the business of getting from A to B in fear of being alone but not being alone, and that’s true for any time of day. But night safety is sadly not a topic that is going to go away any time soon – and Bec, Jenn and Nic hammer home this message that never gets any less relevant by framing it with their usual big and exciting sound, harnessed to their usual ear-friendly poptasticity that provides a musical spoonful of sugar to help the lyrical medicine go down in a most delightful way. It’s a terrific track with a lyric that comes straight from IDestroy’s collective heart, and an instant earworm with an absolute torrent of punky energy from start to finish.
The simple yet strikingly in-your-face video for ‘Headphones’ features all three women dressed in red against a red background, reclaiming the ‘handmaids’ trope perhaps.
Safer streets for all can’t come soon enough, and IDestroy are to be commended for reinforcing that message with an absolutely blinding 2 minutes and 49 seconds of audio energy that should kick off their touring year in fine style. On the subject of which…
