NYC band Slow Fiction release their debut album, dollhouse, exploring themes of identity, self-perception, and performance.
Composed of vocalist Julia Vassallo, guitarists Paul Knepple and Joseph Skimmons, bassist Ryan Duffin, and drummer Akiva Henig, Slow Fiction have transformed their friendship into an unbreakable familial bond that forms the foundation of dollhouse. “We are a family and we work on our music like that. Everyone is part of the organism,” Vassallo explains.
The album opens with a question that becomes one of dollhouse’s support beams: “Who are you when no one’s looking back or through,” Vassallo sings on opener ‘junior year’. From there, the album blurs the lines between surveillance and introspection, wrapping its questions in layers of textured guitars, hazy vocals, and cinematic atmospheres.
Each song is a window into the collective hive mind of Slow Fiction. Moving from room to room, the band processes what it means to feel comfortable in your own skin, letting go of others’ expectations and learning to see yourself on your own terms.
