‘Clotheslines’ by Evelyn Gray is an emotionally-complex folk-adjacent song that reaches for our souls. It’s uplifting, bittersweet, dissonant and kind of Celtic. It makes me feel as if I should dance in a grassy field, but also lie on the floor crying my eyes out.
I find this song so unique it’s hard to compare it, but perhaps I can suggest…Lumineers meet Harvest era Neil Young.
The band is made up of Evelyn Gray on guitar/vocals, Suzie Nicholls on bass, and Sophia Bartlett on violin. I love the way these three musicians blend together, with the guitar and violin trading off in particularly interesting ways. Evelyn’s voice has a somewhat familiar quality that’s both comforting and yearning and perfectly suited to the music.
The song is off Evelyn’s upcoming project I Am Building a House which also includes a novel.

I think that is one of the coolest concepts I’ve ever heard for an album, and if “Clotheslines” is any indication, I think we are in for some exceptional music.
