Labyrinthine Oceans is a Newcastle-based female-fronted, gritty, grungy, dream rock four-piece. Julia O’Neill – rightfully self-proclaimed ‘very loud woman’ – is the driving force of the band, propelling them into a very receptive future, particularly so in the Northeast.
Latest single single ‘Untitled’ allows us an insight into the inspirations and designations of where Labyrinthine Oceans’ heavy, feisty, and sultry soundscape spawns from.
With influences ranging from Nirvana (evident within the sick guitar melodies in ‘Untitled’), Beach House, and Hole with the alluring and sticky vocals, the empowered lyrics within ‘Untitled’ really resonate with the process of female rage. The vocal layering within the single screams of dedication to lighting a fire in the hearts of their listeners; inspiring a passionate understanding of personal struggle with mental health issues, as well as the growth and development into becoming more than before.
With ‘Untitled’ being the first single on an upcoming album there is a level of resolutionary closure, as they have begun to discover their melodious sound as a group. This is coupled with Julia identifying that ‘Untitled’ has been a song she has had in the assessing process for years; originally written and devised for piano as a young teen. Labyrinthine Oceans’ has enabled Julia to bring the single to a place that unanimously assembles the band’s eclectic and uniquely grungy sound. The lyrics are heavy and hauntingly beautiful, amplified truly by the bands’ exploration into ethereal shoegaze guitar backing. The single has left me ready to devour everything Labyrinthine Oceans is set to release, particularly so when the album is curated.
