We already liked GUNK!. Then we discovered there was a 50-page feminist manifesto involved, and frankly that sealed it.
The Colorado Springs five-piece make a properly filthy collision of hardcore punk, sludge, doom and assorted musical fuckery. They’re fiercely DIY, deeply community-minded and exactly the sort of band we hoped we’d find when we started plotting our first LOUD WOMEN Fest Colorado.
Their second album, FEMICIDE, landed, very deliberately, on Valentine’s Day this year. Seven short, furious tracks run from the title track and ‘REVENGE’ through to ‘YOUR MOM IS A SURF BOARD’, ‘FLESH DUST’ and ‘LICK IT UP’.
There’s humour all over GUNK!, but there’s a very serious purpose underneath it.
GUNK!, FEMICIDE and a 50-page manifesto
Ahead of the album, vocalist Willie Cyr started what was supposed to be a small DIY zine looking at femininity, violence and oppression. It kept growing until it became the 50-page Femicide Manifesto, drawing in research and the different perspectives of the band.
Their music doesn’t sit apart from everything else they care about. GUNK!’s own website puts music, gigs and merch alongside mutual-aid and community resources for people in Colorado, with an insistence on looking out for your neighbours and actually doing something rather than just talking about community.
They’re also apparently incapable of simply standing in the assigned place and playing the assigned instrument. Band members regularly swap instruments during live sets.
Listen to GUNK!
Start with FEMICIDE and ‘REVENGE’, then just play the whole record. It’s only about 15 minutes long, so there really is no excuse.
Their self-titled debut GUNK! came out in 2025, and both records are available directly from the band on Bandcamp.
You can also follow GUNK! on Instagram.
