There are some bands you hear and immediately think: yes, you lot belong on a LOUD WOMEN bill.
Brokentear are one of those bands.
Coming from San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Brokentear are Jimena C, Afalefe and Chica de Oro, a queer trio making what they call grunge/punkgaze.
Think punk, grunge and shoegaze all bleeding into each other, with big feelings, fuzzy guitars and songs about vulnerability, catharsis and trying to make sense of the world. There’s heaviness without everything getting bogged down in macho posturing, and plenty of space for melody underneath all that noise.
Very much our thing.
From San Luis Potosí to Boulder
Brokentear have been steadily building beyond their hometown scene, playing shows around Mexico and developing a sound that doesn’t seem remotely interested in fitting neatly into one genre box.
Earlier this year they headed to Mexico City to play House of Vans, and this September were selected for the Encuentro Iberoamericano de Mujeres en la Industria Musical (EIMIM) showcase programme in San Luis Potosí.
Their first album is now on the way, so this feels like a particularly good moment to catch them.
And next stop: Boulder.

Their music is still evolving in public, which is part of what makes them exciting. Punk, grunge and shoegaze rub up against each other without any need to decide which one gets top billing.
Brokentear at LOUD WOMEN Fest Colorado
We’re especially pleased that our first Colorado Fest is bringing together DIY bands from different cities, countries and scenes rather than simply recreating one local bill.
Brokentear are making the journey up from Mexico to join us at the Fox Theatre in Boulder on Saturday 7 November.
If you don’t know them yet, even better. Finding a new favourite band is rather the point.
