Saving Bambi

There’s nothing I love more than a singer with a bit of mischief in her voice, so Saving Bambi had me from the first note. This four-piece from Timmins, Ontario, are Mallory (vocals and guitar), Jasmine (bass), Carlea (drums) and Karine (keys), and they make their debut with Cooking Up Some Girl Shit, a cheeky, fuzzed-up single that’s itching for trouble.

They might call themselves pop-punk, but on this track Saving Bambi lean more towards garage punk ’n’ roll, with plenty of hard rock muscle and a proper party spirit. The track kicks off with a bassline that quickly makes way for crunchy guitars, driving riffs and a simple, direct chorus. There’s a lot of The Donnas in there, a bit of The Baboon Show’s wild streak, and a touch of Joan Jett in Mallory’s raspy, sassy vocals. Rock ’n’ roll, catchy melodies and attitude: it’s the kind of song that makes you turn it up and dance.

Lyrically, they take the tired old idea that a woman’s place is in the kitchen and flip it on its head. With plenty of irony and no filter, they smash frying pans and claim their right to be loud, messy and do whatever the hell they want. The video takes that rebellion to a scrapyard, where the four of them laugh their way through trashing an old truck.

Saving Bambi are here to make noise, have a laugh and turn everything upside down. And I’m itching to join in.
