There is an undeniable gravity to Devotion, the compelling new five-track release via Gravity Records from London outfit, Tough Cookie. Emerging from an echo-laden subterranean church basement, the EP grounds its sprawling, feedback-laced riffs in uncompromising emotional exposure. Frontman, August Tse leads the four-piece through a dense, dynamic landscape; balancing fragile vulnerability against thunderous bursts of guitar work from Jess Ayres while pulling back the curtain on the messier parts of human connection. Each track explores the heavy weight of topics such as codependency, obsession, and the quiet ache of watching someone slip away. Devotion delivers a bold, lingering collection that proves alternative music hits hardest when it is completely raw and deeply personal.

Serving as the EP’s opener, ‘Mercy!’ dives straight into the wreckage of emotional aftermath. Driven by a relentless, pulsing rhythm and jagged guitar riffs the track captures the disorienting stillness that follows a sudden shock. Tse’s vocals balance restraint with desperation, grounding the band’s raw basement energy in vulnerability. It’s an uncompromising start that sets a high bar for the rest of Devotion.

My personal favorite, ‘Let Me Die (Curled In Your Arms), is like the beating heart of Devotion. If ‘Mercy’ deals with the violent shock of an emotional crash, ‘Let Me Die (Curled In Your Arms) explores the blissful, dangerous aftermath of total surrender. The track opens with delicate, clean arpeggios that linger in open space, creating an atmosphere of breathtaking intimacy. Tse’s vocal delivery is at its most vulnerable, capturing the seductive pull of an attachment that you know is unravelling. But Tough Cookie doesn’t let you linger in the quiet for too long. ‘Let Me Die (Curled In Your Arms) gradually swells, erupting into a wall of fuzz and cathartic noise. This track is a gorgeous, crushing study in codependency; it captures how thrilling and destructive it can be to lose yourself entirely in someone else.

Across Devotion, Tough Cookie bridge the gap between a chaotic collapse and desperate tenderness. Anchored by the visceral punch of ‘Mercy!’ and the haunting intimacy of ‘Let Me Die (Curled In Your Arms)’, this five-track collection solidifies the London quarter as one of the most vital, emotionally charged voices in contemporary alt-rock.
