Nashville experimental duo Total Wife, the project of Luna Kupper and Ash Richter, release come.back.down.x.recovery, a reimagining of tracks from their 2025 album come back down.
After accidentally reformatting the hard drive containing the finished album, half of the record the duo is currently working on, and sessions recorded for other bands, the duo turned to a data recovery service. The result was 25,000 unnamed WAV files, most of which were, according to Kupper, “a rotted screaming mass of different sounds and tracks digi-melted together as if the hard drive did a harsh noise remix of itself.”
Four songs were salvageable, given new life through reimaginings by Winter, Full Body 2, They Are Gutting a Body of Water, and Scott Cortez (Lovesliescrushing, Astrobrite). Lyricist and vocalist Ash Richter shares:
“These salvaged files were then treated so lovingly by generational voices. I feel grateful that they were able to work with what we had and make something cool out of it.”
A system reboot that turns lost recordings into something new, come.back.down.x.recovery transforms a digital disaster into a creative rebirth.
