LOUD WOMEN is delighted to present the exclusive video premiere of ‘I’m a Little Scared’ from North Carolina-based singer-songwriter Lydia Saint George.
There’s something painfully familiar at the heart of the song: that horrible combination of social anxiety, fear of being left out and a memory you can’t quite persuade your brain to leave alone. Saint George wraps it all in atmospheric indie pop with a darker edge, but it’s the vulnerability in the writing that really gets under the skin.
“‘I’m a Little Scared’ is about being scared of feeling left out, haunted by a memory that follows you no matter how hard you try to ignore it or push it away,” Lydia explains. “The highest highs aren’t enough to cancel out the lows. Struggling to differentiate between what’s real and what you’re imagining. Doing anything to quiet the voices, and anything to keep the party from ending.”
The best detail, though, might be what happens when the song reaches the point where a guitar solo ought to be.
“I wrote it when I was struggling with social anxiety and doubting myself as a musician, hence the line about ‘not being good at guitar’,” she says. “When it was time to produce it, I decided to sing the guitar solo rather than play it in order to fit that theme.”
It’s such a smart choice: taking the insecurity at the centre of the song and building it directly into the arrangement rather than simply singing about it.
