In a Body, fronted by Ash Daley, have just released Yeah, I Like Fruit, the first single from their debut album FRUIT, due in 2027.
The song mixes the tight, almost mechanical pulse of Dry Cleaning’s post-punk with the rawer side of ’90s alternative rock. Gritty guitars, heavy, looping riffs and a punchy rhythm section recall the noise rock of early Hole. Over it all, Daley delivers her vocals with a cool, detached irony, almost speaking rather than singing, in a style reminiscent of Mary Timony in Helium. And beneath all that noise, there’s a strange, twisted melody that somehow worms its way into your head.
But it’s the lyrics that really hit hard. Daley looks back on her relationship with a controlling father who claimed to love her unconditionally, while using that supposed love as a means of control. What she got instead was contempt and violence: a punch on the front porch, emails cataloguing her every failure, criticism over something as trivial as a haircut. “It’s all control”, she repeats, and those three words sum up an entire relationship shaped by abuse. Few betrayals hurt as much as those that come from someone who should be protecting you.
The video, directed by Daley herself, channels that tension into a grotesque, surreal story set in a forest, where absurd humour meets unsettling imagery and a deliberately DIY aesthetic.
Above all, Yeah, I Like Fruit is about breaking free from what hurts you and reclaiming what someone tried to take away. Healing can take a lifetime, but In a Body know exactly what they want to say and how to say it. With an introduction like this, FRUIT can’t come soon enough.
