ELEVEN. Somehow LOUD WOMEN is eleven years old, so obviously we’re having a party.
On Saturday 10 October we’re squeezing ourselves into the basement of the Hope & Anchor in Islington with Alexandra Leaving + Lola Pony + I, Doris + Gemma Rogers + Pisces.
Eleven years ago LOUD WOMEN started as a little London gig night with one simple aim: put more women on more stages. Since then there have been hundreds of bands, festivals around the UK and overseas, radio, records, tours, workshops, Rebellion stages, friendships, ridiculous adventures and an absolutely obscene number of spreadsheets.
But after all that, a sweaty basement full of brilliant artists still feels like exactly the right place to have a birthday.
Who’s playing?
Alexandra Leaving brings huge guitars, powerhouse vocals and properly fierce alt-rock. Originally from the West Midlands and now based in London, Alexandra has become a firm LOUD WOMEN favourite, with songs that are sharp, vulnerable and built to be played VERY loud.
Mexican-born, London-based Lola Pony is a performance trashartivist and music alchemist making wonderfully wonky DIY pop from whatever comes to hand. Phones, borrowed instruments, keyboards rescued from bins: nothing is safe.
Of course I, Doris are playing. LOUD WOMEN’s house band and London’s original menopunks will be bringing kitchenpunk, mummycore, keytars, feminist fury, big hooks and the usual deeply questionable choreography.
Gemma Rogers combines razor-sharp storytelling with punky indie-pop, new wave bite and choruses that have a habit of following you home.
And completing the party are Pisces, four slippery fishes from Leytonstone making gloriously gutsy, grunge-tinged alternative rock.
Five acts. One tiny basement. Eleven years of LOUD WOMEN. This feels about right.
