GÖRE are shameless and they know it. More importantly, they know how to have fun, dragging you along for the two-and-a-half-minute ride that is oh no.

The Berlin trio — Marie Joslyn, Emma Meerjanssen and Patricia Bonsaver — are back with the second single from Crush, their upcoming EP. This time, their mission is pretty simple: to ask, politely and with impeccable manners, that certain men with microphones shut the fuck up for once.

Musically, oh no is all about weight: abrasive guitars, distorted bass and dry drums locked into a mid-tempo groove that gives the track a thick, dragging feel. The unrestrained phrasing and screams inevitably bring Bikini Kill and Babes in Toyland to mind, but the overall sound leans more towards grunge-punk and heavy garage, with a sludgy edge that puts GÖRE closer to contemporary bands like Die Spitz.

The anger is there, obviously, but GÖRE would rather take the piss out of it. They work with minimalism, mockery and an almost schoolyard-like delivery, with the silences, the “oh no”s, the repetitions and the backing vocals landing like punchlines. This is where they connect with Panic Shack, especially in the way they push the sarcasm and theatrics into something camp without letting the whole thing get too serious.

The lyrics go straight for podcast bros, talk-show panellists and the usual loudmouths, without even bothering to argue with them. First comes the polite request, delivered in an almost doll-like voice. Then patience runs out: “SHUT THE FUCK UP”. End of debate.

Crush lands on 9 October. If this is only the appetiser, more than one podcast bro might want to step away from the microphone.
