Brooklyn indie-pop artist Rachel Bochner tackles the horrible guilt of ending a relationship you know you cannot stay in on new single ‘Say That You Don’t’. It is not about wanting the person back. It is about wishing they would stop loving you, so you could stop feeling responsible for the pain.
“If they looked me in the eyes and told me they barely even thought about me after I left… could I sleep a little better at night?”
That fantasy is selfish, as Bochner freely admits, but also painfully human. ‘Say That You Don’t’ understands that leaving can be both necessary and devastating, particularly when the relationship has become tangled up with finally recognising your own queer identity.
Bochner describes the life she had built as a “hand-built prison”. The song sits in the uncomfortable space after escaping it, where freedom, grief and guilt all arrive together.
