Cardiff indie-folk artist Sad Cypress offers two very different forms of enchantment on new double A-side ‘Sirens’ / ‘It Means A Lot To Me’.
Clocking in at under a minute, ‘Sirens’ barely needs time to cast its spell. Waltzing guitars and swirling harmonies rework the old mythology: these sirens are not interested in luring sailors to their deaths. They would simply prefer not to be interrupted.
“Rather than drawing unwitting sailors to their deaths, these sirens don’t want any distractions… what it is they are doing is more interesting.”
‘It Means A Lot To Me’ is longer, quieter and far more exposed. Piano, jazz-flecked melodies and Sad Cypress’s intimate vocal create something that feels less like a performance than an attempt to communicate a feeling ordinary language cannot quite hold.

Both tracks come from Princess of Cups, an EP rooted in a story set in Cardiff’s Waterloo Gardens. Together, they capture what makes Sad Cypress’s world so intriguing: part music, part literature and part something glimpsed moving beneath the water.
