Welsh alt-pop artist ADERYN turns the agony of loving someone who may not love you back into something grungy, intimate and faintly devotional on new single ‘Please’. Soft guitars and close, double-tracked vocals build slowly around a question she already seems to know may not be answered.
“I have a voice memo of me writing this song, and top to bottom I wrote it in twelve minutes. That’s how you know there’s a monster of emotion inside you that needs to work its way out.”
It feels that immediate. ‘Please’ has the slightly breathless quality of an emotion escaping before good judgement can intervene. ADERYN treats unrequited love like an act of faith: devotion, doubt, anger and the willingness to keep believing despite a fairly alarming lack of evidence.
The final refrain brings in an organ recorded by Owain Fleetwood Jenkins in a Pembrokeshire chapel, pushing the whole thing towards rapture. It ought to be too much. Thankfully, the song has earned it.
