LOUD WOMEN is thrilled to premiere Beijing artist Mixol‘s focus track, ‘a play of reincarnation’, from her debut EP, The Fool, ahead of tomorrow’s general release.
Opening the EP, ‘a play of reincarnation’ sets the tone with theatrical, cinematic chamber pop and dramatic, spellbinding vocals. Reflecting The Fool’s themes of jealousy, heartbreak and revenge, the track unfolds like a haunting spell.
A self-proclaimed witch, Mixol blends language, culture and mythology with her own experiences of living between cultures, where even the texture and sound of words become part of her creative process. Inspired by her “four mothers of creation”, Björk, Kate Bush, Fiona Apple and Sheena Ringo, traces of their influence can be heard throughout her work, yet Mixol burns brightly with a vision of her own.
With her debut EP, Mixol has created an entire universe through music, mythology, games and visuals. Exclusively for LOUD WOMEN, she shares her thoughts on building the world of The Fool:
“It’s my imagination or my silliness? Haha. One day I thought “it will be great if we have a game since we can play it in the restroom and it doesn’t take too long!” Because I remember the days that we didn’t have smartphones and staring at the shampoo label when we’re in the restrooms when I was young. Or sometimes I imagine myself being a navigator or explorer, sleeping in the woods or on my boat… then some ideas of visuals just naturally popped up in my head along with this imagination. It’s so much fun to let my mind wander and write something down such as “navigator journal”, then it might become my merch in the near future! My mind is where I build the music universe first, then me and my team we try our best to bring them to the reality. :)”
Inspired by the first card of the tarot, which represents new beginnings, The Fool shifts in meaning and context throughout, much like the card itself, which changes depending on whether it is drawn upright or reversed. The EP can be viewed as a sense of brightness and excitement, inviting listeners into the mind of an emerging artist, or as a spiral into the unknown, embracing the uncertainty of taking the leap, whether with confidence or recklessly.
