Glasgow-based indie rock band merrowfolk debuts with a single ‘Beckoning Back’. The band, true to its name, has a siren-like quality to it: the lyrics are dark but benevolent, soulful, and the instrumental pulls you in like the claws of a merfolk lurking in the depths of the ocean.
The collective, consisting of Clare McBrien, Freya Giles, Nicola Denman, Ali Hendry, Douglas Knight, Andrew MacDonnel, and Alexander Meyer, initially formed around an Irish singer Mima Merrow. Merrow is already known for her unique approach to alternative folk, intertwining wild nature and human affections in her music.
‘Beckoning Back’ possesses a rich, dramatic sound, driven by heavy bass and drums and completed by gorgeous, layered vocals and theatrical ad-libs; not dissimilar to PJ Harvey and The Amazing Devil. If you are a fan of dramatic, luscious sound, haunting siren-like voices and whimsical storytelling, merrowfolk is worth following.
