Portland-based emotronica artist saoirse dream hits a breaking point with surveillance and status quo in her new single ‘onlooker’, out now via Lauren Records. The track is a slight lane switch from the hyperpop that she is best known for, and it’s sick.

The softly modulated vocals sound like a darker strain of Cocteau Twins as they question “if everyone’s like me, then what’s the point?”

Catherine Egbert, the versatile producer behind saoirse dream, tucks wisps of electronic embellishments under those vocals and her fuzzy guitar riffs. The result of the blend is a gritty, sweet shoegazey sound.

‘onlooker’ was penned to be the soundtrack of Ethernet Wang‘s experimental short ‘HOW TO FIND A CAREER THAT LOVES YOU BACK‘. Like the film, ‘onlooker’ criticizes, rebels, and empowers with the digital at the core of it all.

The online release of Wang’s ‘HOW TO FIND A CAREER THAT LOVES YOU BACK’ will be available 10 July at 7PM CT / 10PM ET and 11 July at 3AM London on Vimeo, YouTube, and archive.org.
