Toronto rock artist Feura comes out swinging on her debut single, ‘Lose Your Head’, a punchy, sarcastic anthem for anyone who’s ever been told they’re too much.

Growing up as one of the only people of colour in a small rural Ontario town, Feura spent years trying to fit in. Eventually, she stopped trying. “‘Lose Your Head’ came from this feeling that no matter what I do, people will find a reason to react to me just existing,” she explains.

“I’m queer, BIPOC, East Asian, and a type 1 diabetic, and whether I want to define myself by those labels or not, they’ve always shaped how people treat me. So, at a certain point it became: Screw it. If people are going to lose their minds over me anyway, I’m going to be fully myself.”

That attitude runs right through the song. ‘Lose Your Head’ isn’t about asking for acceptance or understanding. It’s about recognising that some people will always find a reason to be uncomfortable with anyone who refuses to fit neatly into their expectations. As Feura puts it:

“It’s about being unapologetically yourself, even if it makes people uncomfortable, because that discomfort usually says more about them than it does about you.”

Musically, the track delivers exactly what the message demands: big riffs, a huge chorus and plenty of attitude. I particularly enjoyed the line, “You get mad that I got tattoos, chipped nail polish, studded shoulders”, which neatly skewers the bizarre things people choose to be offended by. The chorus – “You can’t help but lose your head every time I take a breath” – turns that judgement back on itself with a grin.

For a debut single, it’s a confident statement of intent. Feura isn’t introducing herself so much as drawing a line in the sand.

Feura will be bringing ‘Lose Your Head’ to stages across Ontario this summer, including appearances at London Pride, Kempenfest in Barrie, Honey Jam at TD Music Hall in Toronto and Gussapolooza, with further dates through September.
