The Dublin-based quartet Dose have built their career with patience and precision, releasing their debut single ‘Cuckoo’, supporting Throwing Muses and establishing a growing reputation on the Irish music scene. ‘Shelley’ feels like the clearest statement of intent so far.

The song takes its name — and its weight — from Shelley Duvall, not the actress from The Shining, but the woman who came after. According to a widely repeated and largely false account, she simply vanished. Dose turn that feeling into something tangible: the sensation of having so much attention focused on you that you come to believe you don’t exist. ‘No one thinks you’re really there’ is repeated almost obsessively, until it starts to seem true.

‘Shelley’ does exactly what the best post-punk does, opening with a deceptively simple bass and guitar riff that gradually builds into something genuinely unsettling. While the atmosphere clearly draws inspiration from Cocteau Twins and Slowdive, there’s also an edginess reminiscent of Dry Cleaning, with repetitive, hypnotic guitars and a bass line that carries much of the melodic weight. This is not escapism; this track envelops you and won’t let go. Lizzie‘s vocals are melodically rich where you might expect something more distant, with a pop instinct reminiscent of Dum Dum Girls.

The lyrics take a different turn. Rather than telling a self-contained story, they are built from fragments: images of disconnection, surveillance, and a presence that is constantly called into question. The most unsettling image is “the Lord picking up your strand of hair”, with the ambiguous “Lord” intruding on a space that isn’t his to occupy.

The short film, directed by Aoife Spratt, is a must-see. Filmed in Wexford, the Wicklow Mountains and a Dublin hotel, it opens with aerial shots before taking a slightly stranger turn. The band transform into distorted versions of the characters from The Shining, blending homage with humour while retaining the sense of unease evoked by the song.

Their debut EP, Sycophantic, is set to be released on Pizza Pizza Records in May 2026, accompanied by a promotional tour. If they’re performing in your area, don’t miss them.
